 Description
Part-Whole:  One meaning of a ratio or fraction that represents a relationship between a part and its whole.

For example, at Smith Middle School, there are 40 eighth graders in the school band and 110 who are not in the school band. The "whole" number of eighth graders at SMS, then, is 150 students. Therefore, we can represent the number of eighth grade band members out of the total number of eighth graders at the school using a part-whole representation: 40/150.
