 Description
Frequency:  The number of times an item, number, or event occurs in a set of data.
"gender," you would count the number of males in your data set - this would be the frequency of males. Then you could count the number of females in your data set, giving you the frequency of females.

The frequencies of a variable can be displayed using a frequency table.

For example, in creating a frequency table of the quality ratings of natural peanut butter, the following data was collected:

Quality Rating

34.00 40.00 52.00 57.00 57.00 60.00 60.00 63.00 67.00 69.00 69.00 69.00 71.00 89.00

Then, the frequencies were computed by counting the number of quality ratings for each range.

Example frequency table:

Range Quality Ratings  Number in Range (frequency)
 30-39 1
 40-49 1
 50-59 3
 60-69 7
 70-79 1
 80-89 1

And that is all there is to creating a frequency table. Often, though, a frequency table is used simply as a stepping stone for creating other representations (line plots, stem-and-leaf plots, and histograms) of the same type of data.
