Average:  An average is a numerical value used to describe the overall clustering of data in a set. Average is usually used to indicate an arithmetic mean. However, an average can also be a median or a mode.

Suppose we have the following test scores from two mathematics classes:

Class 1: 85, 90, 78, 54, 88, 76, 83, 99, 49, 93, 76, 90, 78, 55, 89, 76, 65, 81, 89, 91

Class 2: 76, 80, 59, 89, 92, 68, 55, 77, 98, 95, 80, 90, 96, 80, 78, 65, 77, 92, 89, 60

What if we want to compare the two classes on the math test? We need a way to compare the classes as a whole rather than considering individual scores. Usually people look for averages to help in this situation.
