 Factors:  When two or more integers are multiplied, each number is a factor of the product. "To factor" means to write the number or term as a product of its factors.
Factors and Proper Factors

A factor divides a given number evenly (i.e., there is zero remainder).

Sometimes knowing a little background information about a term can give you a better understanding for the term. It can also give you an idea about how the originators of the term might have been thinking. Let's consider the word factor. Its roots are in the word "factory."
