 Median:  The number in the middle of a set of data when the data are arranged in order. When there are two middle numbers, the median is their mean.
The grassy section in the middle of a highway is called the median. The median of a set of numbers is the value in the middle when the numbers are lined up in increasing or decreasing order. Why do you think median is an appropriate name for this section of the highway?
