 Population:  The entire set of items from which data can be selected.
If you have ever had a blood test, you know that the doctors and nurses take only a sample of your blood to test, not all of your blood. All the blood in your body is the blood population, but the test uses only a sample of the entire population.

A nurse places a sample of your blood in a test tube, not your entire population of blood.
