Sample:  A selection from a population.

To illustrate the difference between population and sample, consider when you visit the doctor. Sometimes the doctor or nurse needs to take a blood sample. In this case, the population is all the blood in your body, while the sample is just what is collected into the test tube. Be thankful for samples!
