Scientific Notation:  A way to express a very large or very small number as the product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10.

In astronomy, scientific notation is used to indicate the distance of stars to the Earth. For example, Alpha Centauri is reported to be the nearest star to Earth. It is 25,000,000,000,000 miles from Earth! Using scientific notation, the distance can be written in the much simpler form of 2.5 * 10^13 miles.
