The total cost of tiling or carpeting a floor is based on the floor's area. Sale
prices will be given in terms of square feet or square yards, which are units
of area. A carpenter would determine his cost by measuring the dimensions of
a room, calculating the area (often of a rectangle), and then multiplying
the area by the unit area cost of the tiling or carpeting. For instance, suppose your rectangular
room has dimensions of 5 feet by 6 feet, and carpeting costs $15 per square
foot. Therefore, the area of your room is 30 square feet, resulting in a cost
of 15*30 = $450 to carpet the room.
