 Arithmetic Mean:  The sum of the numbers in a set of data divided by the number of pieces of data. Also simply called "mean." This is what we usually call "average.".

Newspapers and other media often report the arithmetic mean when reporting averages, such as test scores, income, opinions, medical tests, and budgets.

The arithmetic mean is used to determine a gymnast's or ice skater's score in a competition. After the highest and lowest scores are dropped (in case of bias), the final score is the arithmetic mean of the remaining judges' scores.
