Average:  An average is a numerical value used to describe the overall clustering of data in a set. Average is usually used to indicate an arithmetic mean. However, an average can also be a median or a mode.
Averages are used to represent groups of information. For example, your class average represents your grades on all of your tests, quizzes, and homework.

Averages are used in sports statistics, such as batting average and earned run average, in baseball. These averages are used to describe the quality of a person's hitting and pitching, respectively.
