Splitting Areas

An oblique (slanted) line (a) intersects both the x and y-axes. Construct an overlapping segment that has the x- and y-intercepts as endpoints of the segment (XY). Connect the midpoint of this segment with the origin to make another segment (BV). Describe the relationship between the area of the green and the yellow triangles. Why might this be true? Explain your reasoning.

Submit your idea for an investigation to InterMath.
