Ratios and Part-to-Whole Fractions


Consider the following examples of ratios and fractions that represent a part-to-whole relationship. The examples below each use the same numbers in the ratio and fraction. What similarities and/or differences do you notice?


Ratios Fractions (part-whole)
7 gallons of gas for $12 (7:12) 7 of the 12 gallons used in a trip (7/12)
5 miles hiked in 2 hours (5:2) 5 half-hour meetings (50/2)
1 person, 1 vote (1:1) The fraction of principals voting in the last school-wide election was 1/1.
