Paper Folding

Problem Statement?
If a piece of paper could be folded in half fifty times, what would be the thickness of the folded paper? A ream (500 sheets) of paper is 2 inches thick.


Plans to Solve/Investigate the Problem

I plan to use a spreadsheet to determine the number of pieces of paper after 50 folds. 

 

Investigation/Exploration of the Problem

 First, I set up 2 columns to determine the number of sheets of paper after each fold. Then I converted the sheets of paper to inches using the formula # paper divided by 500 and multiplied by 2. I then converted the inches to feet and then to miles.  The stack would be 71,079,540.
