Title
Alpha Numeric

Problem Statement
Fill in the next letter of the alphabet, using the logic established to list the first eight:

O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, ____

Problem setup

Look at the series of letters to determine if there is a pattern or logic in the sequence of letters.  Eight letters are given, find the ninth letter.

Plans to Solve/Investigate the Problem

The initial plan was to look for a pattern.  Determine if there is a pattern in the order of the letters.  Look at the letter, or look at every other letter.  Next try looking at the number that each letter represents in the alphabet.  Compare distance from one letter to the next.

Investigation/Exploration of the Problem

In looking for a pattern notice that:  1 O, then 2 T’s, 2 F’s, 2’S’s, 1 E, what would be next?  Unable to determine, it could be another E or a totally different letter.  In looking at the number that each letter represents in the alphabet:

O=15 letter, T=20, T=20, F=6, F=6, S=19, S=19, E=5

Next notice the distance from each letter to the next letter:

O + 5= T + 0= T -14=F-0=F +13=S +0=S-14= 5

Still unable to determine pattern.

Next look at the letters to determine if the letters could represent something, ex. Day of the week, month, etc.

Still pattern may not be easily notice.  Letters represent first letter of the number:  One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine.

Extensions of the Problem

Discuss possible extensions for the problem and explore/investigate at least one of the extensions you discussed.
